"I Have Set the Lord Continually Before Me" - Psalm 16:8 - Can Stock Photo - Used under license
"I have set the Lord continually before me;
Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken."
(Psalm 16:8)

     Life moves fast, and storms arise without warning.  In moments of deep uncertainty, people search for an anchor that holds firm against the wind.  David faced personal danger from wild animals, Goliath, King Saul, and the political conspiracy of his son, Absalom (1 Sam. 17:4, 34-35, 48-49; 1 Sam. 18:10-11; 2 Sam. 15:6-12).  Yet, he penned words of unshakeable confidence.  "I have set the Lord continually before me;
Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken" (Psalm 16:8).

This lesson explains the meaning and application of the three phrases in Psalm 16:8 -- "I have set the Lord continually before me," "Because He is at my right hand," and "I will not be shaken."  Keeping God "before us" continually keeps us spiritually stable so we don't totter, slip, or fall when trials and temptations come.

Bible verse quotations are taken from the New American Standard Bible (NASB) unless noted otherwise (Ref. 1).

1. "I have set the Lord continually before me" meaning

     When David says "I have set the Lord continually [always] before me" (Ref. 2), he means that he has made the Lord’s presence the focal point of his mind and heart.  David is not denying hardships, trials, or afflictions. Instead, it is a deliberate choice of focus.  No matter what comes, David focusses his heart and mind continually on the Lord’s presence and commandments (Psalm 18:21-22).

Likewise, as believers, we are to make God the focal point of our mind and heart.  God is to be pre-eminent in our thoughts, word, and deeds -- all the time.  We can keep the Lord continually before us through frequent prayers (such as short “thank you” prayers) during the day, regular daily time for Bible and devotional reading, listening to worshipful music during the day, attending worship and receiving good teaching with other believers (Hebrews 10:24-25, Ephesians 5:18-20).

2. "Because He is at my right hand" meaning

     In Psalm 16:8, when David says "Because He is at my right hand," David is using ancient military imagery.  David is saying that the Lord is his companion, always there on his vulnerable right side to protect and to shield him from any adversary.  Most ancient soldiers were right-handed, and would hold their (defensive) shield in their left hand and their offensive weapon (such as a sword) in their right hand (Ref. 3), leaving their right side unshielded and vulnerable.

Likewise, the Lord, our companion, stands beside us, at our right hand, read to extend his shield to protect us and save us (Psalm 3:3).  Keeping the Lord continually before us -- in our thoughts and prayers -- helps us to be spiritually stable and at peace when troubles come (Philippians 4:6-7 TLB).  The Lord's shield is big enough to protect us.

3. "I will not be shaken" meaning

      When David says "I will not be shaken," he means that means he will not be thrown off balance, destabilized, or utterly ruined by external circumstances.  Because David has set the Lord continually before him, and the Lord is at his right hand, he will not totter, shake, slip, or be moved (Ref. 4).  David does not say that the winds will not blow or that the ground will never tremble.  He is saying that the core of his being will be focused on the Lord, and he will remain secure.

Likewise, when we are focused on the Lord, we will remain secure.  We should practice daily keeping the Lord before us, pre-eminent in our thoughts, words, habits, and deeds.   Remembering that the Lord is at our right hand will keep us secure and at peace when worries cause us distress (Philippians 4:6-7 TLB).

Because the Lord is at our right hand, we will not be shaken (Psalm 16:8).
Because the Lord is at our right hand, we will not totter, shake, slip, or become downcast.

     Application.  Make the intentional, daily decision to make the Lord Jesus the focal point of your life.  Each day "set the Lord continually before you" through prayer, scripture reading, worship, and service to others.

     Prayer.  Thank you, Lord Jesus, for your protective presence, for being at my right hand.  Thank you for helping me to be steadfast and remain unshaken through life's trials.  In you I trust.  In you I am confident and secure.  Amen.
