Find Rest for Your Souls - Matthew 11:29 - Yoked Oxen Pulling a Loaded Cart Together
Find Rest for Your Souls - Matthew 11:29 - Yoked Oxen Pulling a Loaded Cart Together
"Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."  (Matthew 11:29)

The expression, "You will find rest for your souls" occurs only twice in the Bible, in Jeremiah 6:16 and Matthew 11:29.  This lesson explains how rest for our souls is found according to the Bible.

The scripture quotations in this lesson are taken from the New International Version (NIV) unless noted otherwise (Ref. 1).

Consider.  According to the Bible, how does a person find rest for their soul?

1. Rest for our souls is found where God's ancient, good way is honored.

"This is what the Lord says: 'Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.'  But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.'"  (Jeremiah 6:16)

In Jeremiah 6:16, God promised the people of Jerusalem that they would find rest for their souls if they would walk in obedience to God's good way as God had instructed their ancestors.  God's good way was expressed primarily in the Ten Commandments (Deuteronomy 5:1-21,
Deuteronomy 5:33).

In Jeremiah 6:16, the promised "rest" in "rest for your souls" means inner peace and tranquility (Ref. 2, Ref. 3).  This Hebrew word for "rest" in Jeremiah 6:16 occurs only once in the Old Testament (Ref. 2).

Unfortunately, the people of Jerusalem chose to refuse God's instruction.  Their ears were closed and the word of the Lord was offensive to them (Jeremiah 6:10).  By choosing their own way, they did not find rest for their souls.  By choosing their own way, they soon suffered siege and being carried away into captivity (2 Kings 24:10-14).

2. Jesus is the giver of rest to the weary and burdened.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."  (Matthew 11:28)

In Matthew 11:28, we find the first part of Jesus' two-part summons.  The first part of his summons is "Come to me."  The second part, in Matthew 11:29, is "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me."

Jesus is the giver of true rest (Matthew 11:28).  When we come to Jesus as he has already invited us, he gives us rest from our toil, and rest from our burdens.  When we come to Jesus, he unburdens us by forgiving our sins and taking away our anxiety as we place our faith and trust in him (1 John 1:9, John 14:1).

In Matthew 11:28, the rest that Jesus gives us is anapauó
[pronounced, an-ap-ow'-o], which means refreshment (Ref. 4).  The rest [refreshment] that Jesus gives from our anxiety, grief, and sin prepares us to enter (or re-enter) service to Jesus.  By coming to Jesus, and only to Jesus, we find the peace, comfort, and forgiveness that we need (John 14:27, Matthew 5:4, 1 John 1:9).

3. Rest for our souls is found in submission to Jesus' gentle yoke.

"Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."  (Matthew 11:29)

The surprise and main point for this lesson is that rest for our souls is found in submission to Jesus' gentle yoke.  Jesus said we are to take his yoke upon us and learn from him, and we will find rest for our souls.

In Matthew 11:29, the Greek word for "rest" is anapausis [pronounced, ah-NAH-pow-sis] which means inner tranquility (Ref. 5).  This definition for "rest" is similar to the rest the Lord promised we would find by walking in his good way (Jeremiah 6:16, Ref. 2).

Jesus teaches that we find rest [tranquility] for our souls by responding to both parts of Jesus' two-part summons.  First, we come to Jesus and he unburdens us by forgiving our sins and taking away our anxiety as we trust in him (Matthew 11:28, 1 John 1:9, John 14:1).  Second, as Jesus promised, we find rest for our souls by taking on Jesus' yoke, and learning from him.  Taking on Jesus' yoke and learning from him is not "one and done," but is a continuing spiritual process throughout our lifetime (Matthew 11:29).

Rest for our souls is not found in escape from work and service but in submission to Christ for work and service.  Let us then take on Jesus' yoke, learn from him, and serve him daily.  Then we will find that his yoke is easy and his burden is light (Matthew 11:30).

Apply.  Come to Jesus in prayer.  Receive his forgiveness, and release your burdens to him.  Take on his yoke by submitting your will to him, and learning from him.  Ask him to direct you in the work and service he would have you do for others.  Then you will find Jesus' promise -- rest for your soul.

"The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah."  (1 Kings 17:16)

This article presents 19 Bible verses about God's provision for our needs.  "Tell God your needs, and don’t forget to thank him for his answers" (Philippians 4:6).

The scripture quotations below are taken from the English Standard Version (ESV) unless indicated otherwise (Ref. 1).

Bible Verses About God's Provision - Old Testament

Genesis 1:29 - "And God said, 'Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food."

Genesis 41:53-54 - "The seven years of plenty that occurred in the land of Egypt came to an end,
54 and the seven years of famine began to come, as Joseph had said. There was famine in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread."

Exodus 16:4-5 - "Then the Lord said to Moses, 'Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not. 5 On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.'"

Note - The Lord daily provided manna for the Israelite's daily needs and taught them to trust the Lord one day at a time.   Recall Jesus' instruction for how we are to pray:
"Give us this day our daily bread."  (Matthew 6:11)

Deuteronomy 29:5 NIV - "Yet the Lord says, 'During the forty years that I led you through the wilderness, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet.'"

1 Kings 17:14-16 - "For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, 'The jar of flour shall not be spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the earth.' 15 And she went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days. 16 The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah.'"

Psalm 23:1-2 - "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters."

Psalm 34:10 - "The young lions suffer want and hunger;
but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing."

Psalm 37:3-4 - "Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. 4 Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart."

Psalm 37:25 - "I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread."

Isaiah 55:1-2 - "Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. 2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food."

Malachi 3:10 - "Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need."

Bible Verses About God's Provision - New Testament

Matthew 6:11 - "Give us this day our daily bread."

Matthew 6:33 - "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."

Note - Serve God as your first priority, and God promises to provide the things you need for daily living such as food, drink, and clothing (
Matthew 6:11, Matthew 6:31).

Matthew 14:17-21 - "They said to him, 'We have only five loaves here and two fish.' 18 And he said, 'Bring them here to me.' 19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. 21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children."

Luke 12:22-24 - "And he said to his disciples, 'Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!'"

2 Corinthians 9:8 - "And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work."

Philippians 4:6 TLB - "Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs, and don’t forget to thank him for his answers."

Philippians 4:19 NASB 1995 - "And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus."

Note - Be a person who generously shares with others and supports your brothers and sisters in Christ when there is a necessity, and God will supply [literally "fill up"] your needs as well (Ref. 2).  Paul is commending the generosity of the Christians at Philippi.  They generously sent Paul a gift (donation) more than once (Philippians 4:14-18 NASB 1995).

1 John 5:14-15 - "And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him."

"Do not fear or be dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours but God's."  (2 Chronicles 20:15)

Purpose:
This article presents five steps to deal with our personal crises - steps that are scriptural, methodical, and effective.  All of us at times either have faced or will face personal crises.  Circumstances like this strike at the core of our being – physical, spiritual, and emotional.  The Bible is a great comfort to us any time, but especially during difficult times - such as the times we are going through now.

Step 1: Recall God's Promises

The first place to turn to is to the Bible.  Get your attention off of your problem and on to God.  Read and meditate upon God’s promises.  This step has a vastly therapeutic effect.

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling."  (Psalm 46:1-3)

For your encouragement, I have included links to 26 additional "promises passages" from God's word.  You may see all of the verses listed below written out in just one click here (Ref. 1 - "Bible Verses for Times of Crisis").

God's promises verses: Deuteronomy 31:6; Joshua 1:9; Psalm 16:8; Psalm 23:1; Psalm 27:1; Psalm 34:4; Psalm 34:7; Psalm 55:22; Psalm 56:3-4; Psalm 68:19-20; Psalm 91:1-6; Psalm 103:1-5; Proverbs 3:5-6; Isaiah 26:3-4; Isaiah 40:31; Isaiah 41:10; Isaiah 43:2; Matthew 11:28; John 14:27; Romans 8:28; Romans 15:13; Philippians 4:6-7; Philippians 4:19; Hebrews 6:19; 1 Peter 5:6-7; Revelation 21:4.

Read your Bible regularly, not just when you have a crisis.  Memorize scripture verses.  That way, when a crisis arises, you can immediately draw upon familiar, comforting words of scripture, and you will be well-equipped to deal with difficult situations when they occur (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Step 2: Trust in God Through Prayer

Prayer is an open conversation with God.  Even a short prayer, "Help me," is long enough.  Talk with God and ask him to take care of your problem.  Trust God to act (Proverbs 3:5-6).  Ask God to take care of your problem according to God's will, not your own (1 John 5:14-15).  Trust that God is in control of the situation.

Step 3: Solicit Prayer Support from other Christians

Other Christians can bring you much encouragement by praying with you or for you.  Share your need or concern with Christian friends, and ask for their prayers.  When you are "down," others can pray from strength and lift you up.  "Plug in" with one or more small groups of Christians, for example, a Bible study or prayer group, or a fellowship group.  Small groups can provide you tremendous personal support (Matthew 18:19-20; Galatians 6:2; James 5:16).

Step 4: Believe that God Will Act

Keep the faith.  Remember that you have prayed.  Keep on praying.  Don’t give up.  Feed your faith, not your doubts.  Whichever one you feed will grow (Luke 18:1-8; Mark 9:21-24; Psalm 37:5; Hebrews 11:1).  God will do what he promises.

Step 5: Testify Publicly to the Results that God Provides

Tell others how God answers your prayers.  By this, you will encourage other people.  Jesus expects you to “go public” with your testimony about his work in your life – that God may be glorified (Matthew 10:32; Mark 5:18-20; Psalm 66:16, 1 Peter 3:15).

-------------------------------------
Praise God that God's word never passes away (Matthew 24:35)!  We can always count on God to help us through difficult times.  God's promises are true and everlasting.
