"The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah."  (1 Kings 17:16)

This article presents 19 Bible verses about God's provision for our needs.  "Tell God your needs, and don’t forget to thank him for his answers" (Philippians 4:6).

The scripture quotations below are taken from the English Standard Version (ESV) unless indicated otherwise (Ref. 1).

Bible Verses About God's Provision - Old Testament

Genesis 1:29 - "And God said, 'Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food."

Genesis 41:53-54 - "The seven years of plenty that occurred in the land of Egypt came to an end,
54 and the seven years of famine began to come, as Joseph had said. There was famine in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread."

Exodus 16:4-5 - "Then the Lord said to Moses, 'Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not. 5 On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.'"

Note - The Lord daily provided manna for the Israelite's daily needs and taught them to trust the Lord one day at a time.   Recall Jesus' instruction for how we are to pray:
"Give us this day our daily bread."  (Matthew 6:11)

Deuteronomy 29:5 NIV - "Yet the Lord says, 'During the forty years that I led you through the wilderness, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet.'"

1 Kings 17:14-16 - "For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, 'The jar of flour shall not be spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the earth.' 15 And she went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days. 16 The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah.'"

Psalm 23:1-2 - "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters."

Psalm 34:10 - "The young lions suffer want and hunger;
but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing."

Psalm 37:3-4 - "Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. 4 Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart."

Psalm 37:25 - "I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread."

Isaiah 55:1-2 - "Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. 2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food."

Malachi 3:10 - "Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need."

Bible Verses About God's Provision - New Testament

Matthew 6:11 - "Give us this day our daily bread."

Matthew 6:33 - "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."

Note - Serve God as your first priority, and God promises to provide the things you need for daily living such as food, drink, and clothing (
Matthew 6:11, Matthew 6:31).

Matthew 14:17-21 - "They said to him, 'We have only five loaves here and two fish.' 18 And he said, 'Bring them here to me.' 19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. 21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children."

Luke 12:22-24 - "And he said to his disciples, 'Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!'"

2 Corinthians 9:8 - "And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work."

Philippians 4:6 TLB - "Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs, and don’t forget to thank him for his answers."

Philippians 4:19 NASB 1995 - "And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus."

Note - Be a person who generously shares with others and supports your brothers and sisters in Christ when there is a necessity, and God will supply [literally "fill up"] your needs as well (Ref. 2).  Paul is commending the generosity of the Christians at Philippi.  They generously sent Paul a gift (donation) more than once (Philippians 4:14-18 NASB 1995).

1 John 5:14-15 - "And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him."

"Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat.  Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price." (Isaiah 55:1)

This lesson explains God’s great invitation in Isaiah 55:1, "Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters," and "Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price."

This lesson is the second in a series on God's Invitations in the Bible, specifically, the "Comes" of God's word.  The first lesson in the series was "Come Now, Let Us Reason Together (Isaiah 1:18)" (Ref. 1).

Consider.  Are you are spiritually thirsty or hungry?  Come to God and find true refreshment and nourishment for your soul.

Everyone Who Thirsts

God invites thirsty people to come to him.  When you are thirsty, you know that you have an intense desire to satisfy your thirst (for example, with a drink of water).  When you are a sinner you may already sense your need for salvation (Matthew 5:6, Ref. 2).  God, and only God, is the one who can satisfy your thirst.

The Psalmist recognized the thirsting of his soul when he wrote,
"As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.  My soul thirsts for God, for the living God" (Psalm 42:1-2).

Come to the Waters

God himself is the source of the spiritual water that truly refreshes and revives.  The Lord said, "For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants" (Isaiah 44:3).  Likewise, when Jesus, the Son of God, encountered the Samaritan woman at the well, he said to her, "Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst.  But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life" (John 4:13-14).

God invites you to come to him to satisfy your spiritual thirst (John 7:37).

Come, Buy, and Eat

God provides food that truly satisfies, and it is free.  God alludes to the food that satisfies in Isaiah 55:2, "Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy?

The real blessing, the real food which truly satisfies people's wants and desires is Jesus himself.  Jesus said, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst" (John 6:35, Ref. 3).

Come, Buy Wine and Milk without Money and without Price

In Isaiah 55:1, wine and milk are figurative for God's choicest blessings (Ref. 4).  Wine is a gift of God (Genesis 27:28).  Melchizedek, priest of God Most High, brought wine and bread together to Abraham (Genesis 14:18).  The Psalmist wrote that wine gladdens the heart of man (Psalm 104:14-15).  Milk provides nourishment needed for sustenance and growth (Proverbs 27:27, 1 Peter 2:2).

God offers spiritual blessing without money and without price.  No silver or gold can buy the blessing which God offers (Ref. 5).

Jesus Christ himself is the gift that God freely offers (John 3:16).  Jesus himself is the all-sufficient supply for every thirst of your soul (John 7:37, Ref. 6).

Apply.  Accept God's invitation.  Come to God and find true satisfaction for the hunger and thirst of your soul.  Put your faith and trust in God's Son, Jesus, who promises, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst" (John 6:35).

"Jesus said to them, 'I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.' " (John 6:35)

"Christ shows that he is the true Bread; he is to the soul what bread is to the body." -- Matthew Henry (Ref. 1)

This lesson is the second in a series on the "I AM" statements of Christ.  This lesson discusses Jesus' statement, "I am the bread of life" (John 6:35).

Consider.  Have you come to Jesus, the Source of sustenance and strength for your spiritual life?

God-provided bread from heaven

Jesus' Jewish listeners knew that God had provided bread from heaven (also called "manna") to the Israelites.  "Then the Lord said to Moses, 'Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether or not they will walk in My instruction' " (Exodus 16:4).  The manna that God provided was essential for the Israelite's survival (Exodus 16:35).  Note, however, at that time God did not provide the manna universally to all people.  Exodus tells us that God provided the manna only for the Israelites, and the manna was temporary (Exodus 16:35).  The people who ate the manna eventually died (John 6:49).

"I am the bread of life"

In contrast with the manna that God provided temporarily to the Israelites, Jesus states emphatically, "I am the bread of life."
  • Like the manna, Jesus Christ, God's Son, is God's provision sent from heaven.  Jesus said, "For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world" (John 6:33, Luke 1:34-35, John 1:14).
  • Like the manna, Jesus provides us essential nourishment.  In the same way natural bread is essential for our physical life, Jesus is essential for our spiritual life.  Natural bread is for the body.  Jesus himself is for the craving of our soul (Ref. 2).
  • Unlike the manna which only sustained earthly life temporarily, Jesus, the bread of life, sustains permanent, eternal life (John 6:40, Ref. 3).
  • Unlike the manna which God offered only to specific people at a specific time, Jesus Christ, the bread of life, offers spiritual nourishment and eternal life to the world.  "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life" (John 3:16).

"He who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst"

Before the manna could benefit the Israelites, they had to eat it.  In the same way, for Christ to provide us spiritual sustenance and eternal life, we must come to him and believe in him.  When we come to Christ and believe in Christ, he alone satisfies the hunger and thirst of our souls (Matthew 5:6, John 7:37).

The Samaritan woman at the well responded to Jesus.  She said, "
Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw" (John 4:15).  The multitude responded to Jesus when he described the bread of heaven (John 6:33).  They said, "Lord, always give us this bread" (John 6:34).

Apply.  What is your response to Jesus?  Will you come to him and believe in him?  Come to him, believe in him, and you will receive the bread of life that your soul craves.
